Yamaha's 2027 Plans in Jeopardy? Not So Fast!
Yamaha's MotoGP team is facing a challenging situation as they negotiate with star rider Fabio Quartararo for the 2027 season. But are recent testing issues at Sepang a deal-breaker? Team boss Massimo Meregalli doesn't think so.
The team is in a critical pre-season phase, developing a new V4 engine while trying to secure Quartararo's signature. Rumors swirled that the 2021 world champion had already committed to Honda for next year, but Quartararo denied this, confirming he's still in talks with multiple brands, including Yamaha and Honda.
But here's where it gets controversial: Yamaha's engine trouble at the Sepang test, which forced them to sit out on Wednesday, could have been a significant setback. Meregalli, however, remains optimistic, stating that the issue hasn't influenced Quartararo's decision-making process.
"We were just waiting... The discussions can start after this test," Meregalli said, referring to the postponed talks. He assured that the engine problem was unprecedented for Yamaha, and the engineers swiftly identified and resolved the issue, allowing them to resume testing.
With the problem seemingly fixed, Yamaha is now looking ahead to the Buriram test in a few weeks to make up for lost time. Will this be enough to secure Quartararo's services for 2027? Only time will tell.
