Vergil Ortiz Jr. has filed a federal lawsuit against Golden Boy Promotions, seeking to terminate his relationship with the company and end stalled negotiations for a highly anticipated fight against Jaron 'Boots' Ennis. The 27-year-old, an unbeaten World Boxing Council interim junior middleweight champion, argues that his promotional agreement with Golden Boy has been breached and that the promoter interfered with his earning potential. The lawsuit centers on a termination clause, which allowed Ortiz to walk away if Golden Boy's broadcast partnership with Dazn ended, a condition that was triggered when the promoter's deal with the streamer expired on December 31st. Ortiz formally exercised his right to terminate the agreement on January 8th, but Golden Boy disputes this, claiming ongoing negotiations and exchanged drafts constitute a binding agreement. The lawsuit seeks declaratory relief to clarify Ortiz's contractual status, as uncertainty is impacting his prime years of career development. Beyond the termination clause, Ortiz alleges that Golden Boy breached the agreement by failing to present him with multiple opponent options for the Ennis fight and by threatening to sideline him if he declined. Golden Boy has also been accused of failing to disclose written documents related to the fight and of publicly asserting control over Ortiz's career without authorization, causing confusion within the industry. The lawsuit adds to a growing list of contractual disputes involving elite fighters and Golden Boy, including Canelo Álvarez, who successfully exited a promotional deal with the company through a previous legal battle represented by Ortiz's attorney, Gregory Smith.
