Eight-year-old Chloe Jeffries, a schoolgirl from the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia, lost her life during a family vacation at a Japanese ski resort. While riding a snowmobile in the Hakuba Valley, northwest of Nagano prefecture, the vehicle tipped and rolled, causing fatal injuries. Emergency responders arrived promptly; she received first aid at the scene and was airlifted to hospital, but doctors were unable to save her.
Hakuba Lion Adventure, the tour operator, noted that nine snowmobiles took part in the excursion, including three guides. The incident occurred near an uphill curve along a forest road when the snowmobile rode up onto an embankment beside the trail and overturned. A passenger riding in tandem beneath the vehicle became trapped after the overturn.
The company announced a temporary suspension of all snowmobile and snowshoe tours as it reviews its offerings and safety procedures. It is cooperating with police and other authorities to investigate the death and has apologized for the distress caused to those affected.
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it was providing consular assistance to Chloe’s family and offered condolences during this difficult time.

In January, Queensland snowboarder Brooke Day died after an avalanche rescue backpack became entangled in a chairlift.
