A chilling confession has resurfaced, reopening a decades-old wound. Richard Cottingham, infamously known as the "Torso Killer," has admitted to the 1965 murder of Alys Eberhardt, bringing a new level of horror to a case that has haunted the New York City area for years.
This announcement, made by New Jersey police, reveals that Cottingham confessed to the murder of 18-year-old Alys Eberhardt, who was found dead in her family's home in Fair Lawn, a suburb just outside of Manhattan, back in 1965.
The investigation, which was reopened in 2021, involved numerous interviews over several years. This led to a full confession from Cottingham, including details previously unknown to the public. Fair Lawn Police Chief Joseph Dawicki stated that while Cottingham will not face additional charges, the department is closing the case, offering a semblance of closure to the victim's family.
Cottingham, now 79 years old, has been incarcerated since 1980 and is currently serving three life sentences at the South Woods State Prison in Bridgeton, New Jersey. Chief Dawicki expressed hope that the confession would bring some peace to Eberhardt's family, knowing the person responsible can no longer harm anyone else.
But here's where it gets controversial... Cottingham has claimed responsibility for up to 100 homicides dating back to the 1960s, although authorities have officially linked him to about a dozen. In 2022, he admitted to killing five women in the New York City suburbs of Long Island. He was sentenced to 25 years to life for the 1968 slaying of 23-year-old Diane Cusick but received immunity for four other killings as part of a plea deal. Cottingham was previously convicted of killing five other women, and he has admitted to killing several others while behind bars.
He earned the moniker "Torso Killer" because he dismembered some of his victims, adding another layer of terror to his crimes.
