The Acolyte Showrunner Addresses Ki-Adi-Mundi Canon Controversy and Says 'I'll Take the L'
The Acolyte, a Star Wars series that hit Disney+ in June 2024, sparked a heated debate among fans over a brief cameo of a prequel-era Jedi, Ki-Adi-Mundi. The controversy centered around the character's age, as the 1999 Star Wars: Episode I Insider’s Guide CD-ROM listed Ki-Adi-Mundi as 60 during the prequel trilogy, while The Acolyte takes place roughly 100 years before The Phantom Menace. Leslye Headland, the showrunner, addressed the issue on The George Lucas Talk Show, explaining that she consulted with Lucasfilm's Star Wars Lore Advisor, Pablo Hidalgo, who gave her the go-ahead to include Ki-Adi-Mundi in the series. Despite this, the debate continues online, as fans are surprised that the character made it through all the gates of Lucasfilm's canon. The controversy highlights the complex and sometimes messy nature of Star Wars canon, as Headland believed she was playing within the lines. However, the series faced a larger storm, as it was review-bombed and ultimately canceled just two months after its premiere, reportedly due to low viewership, despite being the second-most-watched Disney+ series of 2024.
