Rock music's enduring legacy is a topic that continues to spark passionate debates. In a recent appearance at MIDEM 2026, Sharon Osbourne, the iconic widow of Ozzy Osbourne, shared her thoughts on why rock will never fade away.
"It's not just a genre; it's a soul-stirring art form," she emphasized. "And that's why it will always find its audience."
But here's where it gets controversial...
Sharon believes that rock's essence lies in its authenticity. "When you see a band playing their own instruments, it's magical. It's a far cry from the manufactured pop acts of today," she explained.
She went on to criticize boy bands, saying, "They just sing and dance. It's like, 'Where's the substance?' Rock offers something deeper; it's an experience."
And this is the part most people miss...
Sharon highlighted the industry's disconnect from the street. "Those in offices and luxury cars don't understand the raw energy of rock. They see it as an outcast, but that's what makes it so appealing to the true fans," she added.
The mainstream press, she argued, is also partly to blame for rock's perceived decline. "They're always chasing the next big thing, ignoring the rich history and talent that rock offers."
Sharon's passion for live performances is evident. She believes that the record industry's decline has shifted the focus to touring, where artists can truly connect with their audience.
"Ozzfest was all about giving new talent a platform. It was our way of keeping the spirit of rock alive," she said, referring to the annual festival she spearheaded.
Launched in 1996, Ozzfest brought together established acts and up-and-coming bands, creating a unique metal festival experience.
"We wanted to create a space where new talent could thrive, and it became a summer camp of sorts for rock enthusiasts," Sharon recalled.
So, is rock music here to stay? According to Sharon Osbourne, the answer is a resounding yes.
"Rock is not a trend; it's a way of life. And as long as there are artists with soul and passion, it will continue to evolve and inspire."
