A piece of history is about to get a new lease on life! Plans are in motion to breathe new life into a former early 20th-century mill in Long Eaton, transforming it into 80 modern homes. Developer ALB Group has submitted proposals to Erewash Borough Council to convert Bridge Mills, located on Derby Road, into a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments.
This isn't just any building; it's a three-story former lace factory, a relic of a bygone era, situated alongside the picturesque Erewash Canal. Adding to its historical significance is a towering 110-foot (33.5m) brick chimney, a true testament to the industrial prowess of the time.
If the plans are given the green light, ALB anticipates an immediate start to the project, with the first apartments potentially ready for occupancy within 18 months. Imagine moving into a beautifully renovated space steeped in history!
But here's where it gets interesting... The building, constructed in 1902 by F Perks & Son for Long Eaton Bridge Mills Co. Ltd, holds a unique distinction. It's believed to be the last multi-story tenement factory ever built in England.
Arran Bailey, the managing director at ALB, shared his enthusiasm, stating, "Long Eaton has a rich history in lace-making and manufacturing, and its buildings are a powerful reminder of that heritage. We are honored to preserve these buildings, which once provided employment and will now offer much-needed housing to the local community."
