A desperate plea for help has been made by an Irish citizen, Seamus Culleton, who finds himself trapped in a US immigration nightmare. His story is a stark reminder of the human cost of immigration policies.
Despite having a valid work permit and no criminal record, Culleton has been detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for an agonizing five months. Conditions in the Texas detention center are described as akin to torture, with a volatile atmosphere and a constant fear for his safety.
"I'm not afraid of the other inmates; I'm afraid of the staff. They're capable of anything," Culleton shared in an interview with Ireland's RTÉ radio.
Culleton, originally from County Kilkenny, runs a successful plastering business in the Boston area. However, his life took a turn when he was followed and arrested by ICE agents after purchasing supplies at a hardware store.
Here's where it gets controversial: Culleton entered the US through a visa waiver program and overstayed the 90-day limit. But after marrying a US citizen, Tiffany Smyth, and applying for lawful permanent residence, he obtained a statutory exemption that allowed him to work. So, why is he still detained?
His lawyer, Ogor Winnie Okoye, explains that the detention prevented Culleton from attending his final green card interview, which would have confirmed his legal status. "It's inexplicable that this man has been in detention," Okoye stated.

Despite the circumstances, Culleton tries to stay positive. "I talk to my wife every day; she's my rock. My family is my support system," he shared.
But his plea for help is urgent. He appeals to Irish authorities to intervene, stating, "My family in Ireland is suffering, especially my mother. I just want to get back to my life and start a family."
The case has the potential to strain relations between Ireland and the Trump administration, which has criticized Ireland on matters of corporate tax, trade, and immigration. Some opposition parties have even urged the Taoiseach to cancel the White House visit to protest Trump's policies.

"There's no reason why the government shouldn't just release him and allow him to attend the interview that will confirm his legal status," Okoye argued.

Figures released on Monday support this claim, showing that less than 14% of immigrants arrested by ICE in Trump's second term had charges or convictions for violent crimes, contrary to the administration's "worst of the worst" narrative.
