In a proactive move, NASCAR announced a one-hour bump in the start time, aiming to outsmart the elements and avoid the all-too-familiar weather delays at Daytona International Speedway.
But here's the catch: The forecast for Daytona Beach, Florida, on race day is far from ideal. FOX Weather predicts scattered thunderstorms, with a 40% chance of rain at 6 p.m. ET, escalating to a 100% chance by 7 p.m. ET. As the race progresses, the weather is expected to deteriorate, with the FOX Forecast Center warning that the longer the race, the worse the conditions will become.
The high temperature will reach 80 degrees Fahrenheit, with a low of 59 degrees, and winds up to 40 miles per hour. The iconic track is well-equipped with lights, ensuring visibility even as the sun sets at 6:13 p.m. ET.
Controversially, the FOX Forecast Center suggests that a storm system moving in from the west could reach the area by early evening, bringing mostly cloudy skies and highs in the upper 70s. However, if the race extends, light to moderate rain is expected to move in around 6 p.m. ET, with potential lightning strikes after 8 p.m. ET.
This weather-related drama isn't new to the Daytona 500. Last season's race endured two delays totaling over three and a half hours due to rain, but William Byron emerged victorious when the race finally concluded.
And the 2026 season is already feeling the rain's impact. The Clash at Bowman Gray, a preseason exhibition race in North Carolina, battled through 17 caution flags and tricky wet track conditions, taking three and a half hours to complete.
