Cheng Tsung-che Waived by Rays: What's Next for the Taiwanese MLB Player? (2026)

Breaking News: The Tampa Bay Rays have made a surprising move, designating Cheng Tsung-che, the sole Taiwanese position player in the 2025 MLB season, for assignment. This decision has sparked discussions among baseball fans.

On Monday (U.S. time), the Rays waived Cheng and left-handed pitcher Osvaldo Bido. This strategic maneuver was made to free up space on their 40-man roster. They've welcomed left-hander Ken Waldichuk and utility infielder Brett Wisely, acquired in a trade with the Atlanta Braves. In return, the Braves will either receive a player to be named later or financial compensation.

This decision came just a week after Tampa Bay claimed Cheng off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates. They were aiming to enhance their middle infield depth.

But here's where it gets controversial: Cheng, at 24 years old, still has a chance to compete for a roster spot if he clears waivers. If no other team claims him, he could remain within the Rays' organization or potentially find a spot in the minor leagues with another team.

Cheng made his MLB debut in early April 2025 with the Pirates. He was called up after playing 11 games in Triple-A, filling in due to injuries. Unfortunately, he went hitless in seven at-bats across three games before being sent back to Triple-A for the remainder of the season.

In 107 Triple-A games last year, Cheng had a batting average of .207 with a .307 on-base percentage, hitting one home run and driving in 36 runs. His batting average decreased from .278 in 2023 to .225 in 2024 as he progressed through the upper levels of the minor leagues.

Wisely, on the other hand, only hit .185 in the major leagues in 2025. However, his versatility is what sets him apart. He played every infield position except catcher and also spent time in the outfield. This gave the Rays more flexibility and experience compared to what Cheng could offer.

An MLB report noted, "Wisely's ability to play all around the infield could come in handy," especially with spring training just a month away.
