Is there a chance to save a dying MMO? That's the question on everyone's mind as the future of Amazon Game Studios' New World hangs in the balance. The game, once a contender in the massively multiplayer online (MMO) space, is slated to shut down its servers at the end of January, and has already been delisted from all storefronts. But here's where it gets interesting...
The game, which saw nearly 1 million concurrent players at launch, quickly lost momentum due to issues with its quests and endgame content. Now, with the game's fate sealed, a surprising offer has emerged: Alistair McFarlane, the director of Rust, is proposing to purchase New World for a cool $25 million.
Other developers have also chimed in on McFarlane's offer. Bucky, the communications director for Palworld, jokingly offered to collaborate, while Simon Collins-Laflamme, the creator of the highly anticipated sandbox RPG Hytale, offered his support.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Collins-Laflamme's experience with Hytale is particularly relevant. His studio, Hypixel Studios, was acquired by Riot Games in 2020, only to have the project canceled and the studio shut down. However, Collins-Laflamme managed to save Hytale by buying it back and releasing it in Early Access.
Despite its flaws, New World had a dedicated community and some redeeming qualities. The game boasted impressive visuals, engaging gameplay, and exciting large-scale PvP battles.
Currently, McFarlane's offer is still pending. He humorously shared that Amazon has only updated him on his snack delivery.
What do you think? Do you believe McFarlane's offer is a genuine attempt to save New World, or is it just a lighthearted gesture? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
