The Actor's Dilemma: Choosing Between Two Iconic Roles
Brian d'Arcy James, a five-time Tony nominee, has led an extraordinary career in theatre, leaving an indelible mark on both dramatic and comedic stages. From heart-wrenching performances in Titanic and Next to Normal to hilarious turns in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Shrek the Musical, James has mastered the art of emotional versatility.
But here's where it gets controversial... In 2015, James faced a Sophie's Choice that would shape his legacy. He had to decide between two dream roles: remaining with the groundbreaking Hamilton as the original King George III or taking on the leading role in the musical comedy Something Rotten! It was a decision that would test his loyalty and his artistic vision.
"Hamilton was like winning the lottery," James reminisces. "I was there from the beginning, watching it grow into something extraordinary. And then, Something Rotten!, a project I'd been working on for years, suddenly had a Broadway opening. I had to choose, and I'm grateful I could do both."
And this is the part most people miss... James' decision to leave Hamilton, a show that would go on to define a generation of musical theatre, was not without its critics. Some might argue it was a risky move, but James stands by his choice, believing it was the luckiest decision of his career.
"I'm Broadway's Pete Best," he jokes, referring to the original drummer of The Beatles. "I left on my own terms, and just being a part of those shows is an actor's dream. No regrets!"
